Residences
In the last 10 years, I’ve occasionally been in these so-called “artist-in-residence” programs throughout my artistic endeavors. You know, those places where they promise to find yourself, but you end up losing most of your brush enlightenment but often give you a? Here’s a rundown of the genuine wisdom (and perhaps a few caffeine-induced epiphanies) I’ve picked up along the way.
In the vast, perplexing universe of art, where the meaning of a single brush stroke can be as elusive as the digestive purpose of Catalan Calçotadas, there exists a curious phenomenon known as the artist-in-residence program. Imagine, if you will, a sort of intergalactic exchange program for artists, minus the green aliens and the risk of being left stranded on a distant hot planet. These programs pluck artists from their usual habitats and drop them into new, often bewildering environments where they’re expected to do… well, art things. The perks? A blissful escape from the mundane distractions of Earth, a fresh canvas of inspiration, and the chance to mingle with other artistic life forms. And if you’re wondering where to find these wondrous portals to artistic enlightenment, fear not. From the behemoth that is Transartist to the niche charm of Artist in Residence TV, there’s a wormhole for every artist yearning for a cosmic upgrade.
- Transartist (https://www.transartists.org/en) — This is the mother of all artist residency portals, with a huge and varied selection of opportunities. But heads up, it’s a pretty popular site so that competition can be fierce!
- Resartist (https://resartis.org/open-calls/) — This is the second biggest portal, offering many different options for artist residencies.
- Air-J (https://air-j.info/en/program/) — If you’re not tired of slurping ramen, Air-J is the place to find residency opportunities in Japan.
- China Residencies (https://www.chinaresidencies.com/) — Same as above, but with Chinese delicatessen instead — this website has the lowdown on all the best artist residencies in China.
- Goethe (https://www.goethe.de/en/kul/bku/ser/khs.html) — If you want to make a splash in Berlin, Goethe’s got the dough to make it happen. They offer some sweet funding and resources for artists pursuing residency opportunities in Germany.
- Away (http://www.away.co.at/calls-and-programs-en/) — Ready to get away from it all? This site offers a wide range of programs, from artist residencies to art retreats and workshops, all aimed at fostering creativity and collaboration.
- Artistcommunities (https://artistcommunities.org/directory/open-calls) — Home sweet home! If you’re an artist based in the United States, this site is your one-stop-shop for finding residency opportunities in the good ol’ US of A.
- TV (https://www.artistsinresidencetv.com/en/search-for-a-residence/) — Looking to add a multimedia twist to your artist residency? Check out Artists in Residence TV — they offer a unique audiovisual approach to residency programs.
- SWAP (https://www.artistresidencyswap.com/) — Wanna trade places? SWAP is a platform that lets artists exchange residencies with each other, giving you the chance to experience a different location and collaborate with new artists.
- Hayama (https://www.hayamaresidency.com/) — This Japanese residency program charges a fee for applications, but it’s totally worth it — they provide comprehensive support that covers everything from airfare to studio space to a weekly stipend.
Bonus: 11. EMAP/EMARE (https://call.emare.eu/) — If you’re into art and technology, check out these European programs — they offer opportunities for artists to explore and collaborate on new media and technology projects.
